The National Park Service (NPS) is considering the possibility of charging visitors for overnight camping, but was not sure whether it would be possible to implement this fee program. On Sept. 26, 1969, Luis A. Gastellum wrote to NPCS Administrator George B. Hartzog, Jr. with concerns about the proposed fee program. In his letter, Luis A. Gastellum urged George B. Hartzog Jr. to continue to study the idea. The resulting debate continued until March 1970, when a congressional directive was issued for the implementation of fees.

Private campgrounds are not subsidized like federal parks. They charge visitors' fees. The fee covers expenses incurred for visitors, but it is necessary. Most campgrounds agree that visitors should be charged for the services they receive. Be prepared to pay more for overnight accommodation if you are visiting a popular campground. Although you might be able to negotiate lower rates, expect to pay more for overnight accommodations.

Some campgrounds offer senior citizens free camping, but they must follow all government regulations. A senior citizen can camp with up to four spouses and four children, but a group picnic, backcountry, marine fees, and day-use fees still apply. In addition, a second vehicle must be parked at the same site and pay half of the fee. Additional vehicles must also have valid park tags. If a resident wants to spend a week at the state park, they will likely be charged more.

You don't have to spend more on an RV park if you don't want the resort amenities. Smaller RV parks often offer better amenities and are less expensive than larger parks. Although the prices will be lower, you'll still have a place to park your RV. If you're prepared to compromise certain amenities, this could be a great alternative. This could even help you save money on amenities.

A camping pitch costs for two people, one car and one unit. An awning is free, but some campsites charge a fee. For example, Glimmerglass has sites for six adults and nine children, while site #165 charges a couple of adults and five children. To avoid additional fees or charges, a cabin usually costs more. However, you should check with the campground before booking.

Camping rates will vary depending upon the facility. Campgrounds will allocate each camper a particular space in popular campgrounds. The rates for these sites are usually between 15 and 30 dollars per night. High season may mean that groups might need to be divided. If a group cancels, the cancellation fee will be determined by the number of participants. Before you arrive, be sure to review the rules.
